WHO IS SERGIO

Survivor México 2025 champion, Ironman and personal trainer.

He has guided groups in several countries and is now an Expedition Leader at Eagle Ray.

On this trip, he shapes the day: when to get in the water, where to fish, and when to do nothing at all.

"I'm Sergio, but you can call me Canei. You might know me from Survivor México, which I won in 2025. A few years earlier, I decided to take care of myself: training, eating well, learning how my body works. Today that's what I teach, as a personal trainer in Cancún and to the more than 100 people I've coached.

I've led groups of 8 to 19 through Iceland, the Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes in Guatemala, Hawaii's Big Island, the Dolomites and the Camino de Santiago. On board, we start the day moving on deck. Before you go in the water, I teach you to breathe, and each day you hold your breath a little longer."

History

"On the Camino de Santiago, on the longest stage, part of my group woke up with blisters and no energy left. Before we set off, I ran an exercise on intention and reflection, and we walked that stage with a different attitude.

I read a group in three steps: the welcome message, a longer call before the trip, and body language on day one."

Why I do this

"What draws me to the sea: its mystery, its animals, its colours and its size.

Leaving something good in other people is what makes me feel whole. At sea, I take care of the group. The Eagle Ray crew takes care of the boat."

Lagoon 450F

Catamaran

The Lagoon 450F is the most spacious of Eagle Ray’s boats, the one that offers larger groups room to move comfortably, both on deck and inside. The cabins stay cool on their own, the shower water does not go cold halfway through the week, and the flybridge offers the crew, and anyone who wants it, an elevated place from which to watch the horizon. It is the kind of comfort you are not used to noticing, until the day you need it and it is already there.

Beneteau Sense 55

Sailboat

The Beneteau Sense 55 is the most intimate of Eagle Ray’s boats, a 60-foot monohull built for groups looking for the classic feeling of sailing, and not just a boat that happens to have sails. Thanks to its three private suites, each couple has a door they can close, and the whole group can sit together around the same table in the cockpit for dinner. A hydraulic swim platform lowers directly into the water, so for a swim or to go snorkeling there is no need to climb down a ladder. In addition, it behaves differently from a catamaran: more heel and more response at the helm, ideal for groups that want to enjoy both the sailing and the destination.

The route

Both departures follow the same route: three nights between La Paz and the south of Espíritu Santo.

  1. The route
    1. Both departures · 1 of 4. La Paz → Caleta Lobos or Pichilingue.
    2. Both departures · 2 of 4. Caleta Lobos or Pichilingue → south of Espíritu Santo.
    3. Both departures · 3 of 4. South of Espíritu Santo → Bahía de La Paz.
    4. Both departures · 4 of 4. Bahía de La Paz → La Paz.

Indicative route. It depends on the sea, the wind, the permits and the captain’s call. In November, northerly winds can come in, and if they do we change the order of the coves or stay at the same anchorage. Open Cabins: back at the marina on Wednesday afternoon. Thanksgiving at Anchor: back at the marina around midday on Sunday, so you can fly home the same day. We recommend flights from 16:00.

What is a day on board with Sergio like?

Each day has a structure, not a schedule. Sergio and the crew adjust it according to the wind, the group’s energy, and what each person wants to do. No one has to do everything.

  1. Sunrise

    Body

Mobility and functional training on deck, before coffee.

  2. Morning

    Breath and fishing

The captain chooses the cove for the wind. Sergio works on breathing with the group on deck, then gets in the water with you: freediving first, then spearfishing, each at their own level. Anyone can stay with snorkeling or fish from the boat.

  3. Midday

    Table

Lunch cooked on board with local produce.

  4. Afternoon

    Free

Kayak, paddleboard, swim to shore. Or nothing at all.

  5. Sunset

    Pause

Stretching and breathing at the bow while the light goes down over the desert.

  6. Night

    Anchorage

Dinner on board. If there was a catch that day, it’s on the table.

On Thanksgiving at Anchor, Thursday night is Thanksgiving dinner on board, Baja style.

spearfishing in la paz with eagle ray expeditions

Spearfishing with Sergio

From the water to the table, the same day.

Snorkeling is looking at the sea. Spearfishing while freediving is entering it.

More about spearfishing

Spearfishing is done without a tank: one breath of air, a pair of fins, and a speargun.

That is why with Sergio it starts on deck, not in the water. First you learn how to breathe and relax the body. Then, how to go down a few meters and stay still. Only then, the speargun.

Level

  • No previous experience is needed.
  • Sergio adapts the progression to each person.
  • Anyone who prefers can stick to snorkeling or fish from the boat.

Safety

  • Always in pairs, never alone in the water.
  • Sergio in the water with the group and the boat nearby.
  • With the captain, certified in AIDA II freediving, there are two people on board who know how to move underwater.

Where

  • In the coves the captain chooses each day, according to the wind and water visibility.
  • Only in areas where it is allowed.

What is caught

  • Only permitted species and only what will be eaten that night.

Afterwards

  • The chef cleans it and cooks it on board.
  • If there is no luck that day, dinner is still served.

Scuba diving

Price on request · approx. 360 USD per person per day

For those who want to go deeper than freediving. Around La Paz there are dive sites for different levels.

More about scuba diving
  • Salvatierra: a 75-meter ferry that sank in 1976 after hitting a nearby reef. Today it’s an artificial reef, with groupers, schools of fish and black coral on parts of the hull. About 18 meters deep, Open Water level.
  • El Bajo: three underwater seamounts where you may see pelagic sharks, such as hammerheads and silky sharks. Because of the depth and conditions, Advanced Open Water certification is required.

Organized by number of dives and the group’s certifications. Price on request.

At Eagle Ray, each expedition is led by people who live the sea. Traveling with Sergio are a captain, who handles the boat, reads the sea, and chooses each anchorage according to the wind, and a chef who cooks with local products.

"I've spent 15 years on sailboats around the world: the Bahamas, Polynesia, Brittany, the Caribbean and the Sea of Cortez. I've skippered boats from a Lagoon 41 to a Lagoon 62, and I'm a certified marine engineer, so I know the boat from the helm to the engine room.

On board, I teach sailing, kiting and freediving, and take you paddleboarding and snorkeling. Years of all of it in Baja have taught me to read the sea and the people on it, and to adjust the day as it goes. If it's your first time at sea, you're in the right place."

History

"The story I tell most: seeing Kavachi, an active underwater volcano in the Solomon Islands.

Crossing the equator is when I understood what sailing does for my life, and decided to spend it bringing other people closer to the ocean."

Why I do this

"I love the calm of deep, glassy water, and the adrenaline of the perfect wave and the right wind.

What I look for in guests is the spark in their eyes when the sea starts to work on them. I've watched it change people, me included."

"I've sailed over 30,000 nautical miles, including a round-the-world journey between 2016 and 2026: across the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic, and from Alaska to Japan through the Aleutians and Kamchatka. Before that, I was a maritime lawyer: I worked at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and took part in international climate negotiations.

On board, I'll hand you the helm if you want to learn, and take care of everything if you don't. My students say I stay calm when others don't, and that my stories make even cleaning the bilge enjoyable. They also say I make storms feel like part of the plan. I hope we won't need to test that one."

History

"A transatlantic passage from Spain to Barbados, planned for two weeks, took me 44 days and several broken sails. In 2020, with ports closing worldwide, I sailed from Mexico towards French Polynesia, was turned away, and kept sailing. A cat named Demonic crossed the Pacific with us.

Sailing from Alaska to Japan, I climbed and skied volcanoes in the Aleutians and Kamchatka, with sealskin skis and bear repellent in my bag. I reached Japan with a broken boom."

Why I do this

"I sail under sail whenever the wind allows, not on the engine, so you can hear what I listen for: the silence, and the sound of the hull moving through the water.

For me, the sea is where time feels limited and freedom stays intact. In Baja, I share it from the deck of a boat I know inside out."

The team is assigned according to the boat and the dates; we confirm the Eagle Ray team when you make the final pre-booking. So you can start getting familiar, these are some of the captains and chefs we sail with.

Frequently asked questions

I’m traveling solo. Can I join Open Cabins?

Yes. You get a cabin to yourself for 4,000 USD. You never share a cabin with someone you don’t know.

Who will I be sailing with on Open Cabins?

A small group of up to 6 guests, plus Sergio, the captain and the chef.

What if Open Cabins doesn’t fill up?

It’s confirmed once two cabins are booked, by October 31. If not, you get 100% of what you paid back, or a new date.

Can we come as friends on Thanksgiving at Anchor?

Yes. The boat is private for one group, family or friends, up to 4 guests. You decide who takes the master suite.

Can we bring kids?

Yes. Sergio adapts every activity to each age. Spearfishing starts at 12, always one to one with Sergio.

Do I need experience?

No. Sergio adapts each session to your level, and no one has to do everything.

What happens if the weather turns?

The captain decides the route each day with the wind and the sea. If a cove isn’t right, we go to another one or stay in a sheltered anchorage. The priority is the group’s safety and getting back to La Paz on time.

How much should I tip?

We recommend 10 to 15% of the trip price. Open Cabins: about 300 to 450 USD per person for a cabin for two, or 400 to 600 USD for a solo cabin. Thanksgiving at Anchor: 1,450 to 2,175 USD in total.

How much do I pay to book, and what if I need to cancel?

A 20% deposit books your place, and the balance is due 30 days before departure. If you book later than that, you pay in full. If you cancel, the deposit is not refunded. If we cancel, you get 100% back.

Do I need a fishing license?

The Sea of Cortez requires one for every adult on board. It’s included.

Good to know before you come

Local currency

Mexican peso (MXN). Bills from $20 to $1,000 MXN; the $500 and $1,000 bills can sometimes be difficult to change in small shops. Hotels and most tourism businesses in La Paz accept cards, but in smaller places you will need cash. There are ATMs all over the city.

You won’t need it on board: meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included.

How to get there

La Paz Airport (LAP) is 20 minutes from the marina, with domestic flights and some routes to the United States.

The transfer from the airport to the marina is included.

Los Cabos Airport is 2 hours away by road and is sometimes more convenient, depending on where you are flying from; if that is your case, write to us and we’ll look into it.

Food

La Paz cuisine revolves around the sea: chocolate clams cooked over hot stones, ceviche with a touch of mayonnaise, marlin or octopus quesadillas, and machaca, dried beef or pork, the classic that does not come from the sea. Fish tacos are an icon of the peninsula (they were born farther north, in Ensenada), but here they are just as much at home.

On board, the chef cooks with what these same waters provide, unless you ask for something else.

What to bring

Tip: bring less than you think.

On board you only need a dry swimsuit to change into; the crew takes care of the rest.

For everything else, light clothing made from natural fabrics for the dry heat, something for the cooler evenings, and a hat, because the desert sun hits directly.

Weather

Desert climate, dry almost all year round.

November: northerly winds may come in, bringing short choppy seas. That is why the captain decides the route each day.

Winter (December to February): mild, from 18 to 24 °C, the most pleasant season.

Spring (April and May): the heat starts rising.

Summer (June to August): hot and humid, from 28 to 31 °C.

Hurricane season: from May 15 to November 30, with the risk concentrated in August and September.

Connection

At sea, signal is limited, so expect to be disconnected for a good part of the day.

In La Paz, wifi works well. Starlink on board.
